One more time?
One more time?
This is a test post to see what the posting plug I have installed looks like when it places a post onto Facebook.
Had this been an actual post, it would contain content.
Had there been actual content, this would probably be better. But it’s what we’ve got to work with, and it IS only a test, so …
I have to admit I’m more than a bit overwhelmed by the variety of options WordPress (which powers this blog) has to offer. Some are quite easy to implement, others more than a bit difficult. For now, I plan to keep things exceptionally simple. I may experiment some with the site’s appearance, but I really want to keep things clean and functional. I have enough clutter in my day-to-day world.
That said, I do plan to eventually replace the stars with something a bit snazzier, maybe an actual logo, and perhaps play with some of the various themes out there. (Any of my graphic designer friends want to help? There could be a pizza in it for you … MMMMMMM. PIZZA!)
As far as content, as I’ve already indicated that, gentle reader, is already kind of up to you. I’ve been specifically asked by a few people whether or not this site will host any of my fiction. I hadn’t really thought about that, and for the moment, anyway, it would be kind of a trick since I haven’t written any in ages. That’s certainly one of my goals in 2012 — write more of what I personally enjoy. Instead of a list of resolutions, I took something of a personal inventory at the beginning of the year, and writing for fun is near the top. I wish I had reams of short stories to share at the moment, but that’s just not the case at the moment.
I’ve been considering something akin to regular features, maybe even a “Flash Fiction Friday” or something of the ilk where I write the very best short short story I can in 15 minutes based on words chosen either at random or through some agency by readers. That could be entertaining and more than a bit challenging, but we’ll have to see how that goes.
For now, expect random musings on largely random things. This is more meant as a tool to help me get my personal writing voice back, which I fear has been somewhat stunted of late by the journalistic voice I have to adopt for my daily writings. It’s also something that’s meant to remind me that writing can be fun, not just what I do to pay my manifold bills.
Speaking of, time to get back to work. Today’s random topic: Cotton. I know it exists, I’ll put it that way.
Though I do not count myself an expert on the man, I am well known as a Robert E. Howard fan. My friend Mark Finn has written well today about the passing of an essential figure in the world of Howard fandom and scholarship, Glenn Lord.
A good while ago, I acquired the domain name BrianBethel.com. Unsure what to do with it, it languished for years.
Lately, though, I’ve been wanting to have a place where I could write some longer pieces and share them with a wider audience. I love Facebook and other social networking sites for their ability to connect me easily to friends both old and new, but much of what I would like to write doesn’t easily fit into Facebook’s format, or the sort of vibe such sites encourage.
So what will be here? Well, to some extent any early adopters get a chance to influence that some. I’d welcome your feedback on topics you’d like to know more about or things you’re interested in hearing. But for the most part it will be items of interest to me, so everything from video gaming to a bit sterner and more serious stuff. My interests do tend to run to fairly broad topics.
I don’t plan to be controversial for the sake of controversy, but I plan to pull fewer punches here than I would on a site like Facebook.
Just wanted to get this thing up and running. Let’s see where it takes us.
